COURSE DESCRIPTION
Fluid properties are a base course for third year Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering students. This course offers a through knowledge of properties of petroleum and natural gas. The course starts with the basic of hydrocarbon chemistry. Then the components of petroleum are introduced. Phase behavior of five reservoir fluids is examined in detail. Both correlative and experimental methods to determine the physical properties are introduced. Finally, computational phase equilibria is explained as a basis for the third and fourth year courses.
OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE
The objective of this course is to provide students detailed knowledge of the petroleum and natural gas fluids. The course is designed to cover important fundamental topics so that the students will be equipped with a working knowledge of hydrocarbon chemistry, physical chemistry and thermodynamics.
CONTENT
Origin, habitat and elements of crude oil and natural gas; chemistry of oil; phase behavior of hydrocarbon systems; equations of state; equation of state for real gases; classification of reservoir fluids; properties of dry gases; properties of wet gases; properties of black oils; reservoir fluid analysis; black oil correlations; gas-liquid equilibria.
