COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course covers the basic concepts of the generation of petroleum and natural gas in source rocks, their migration to reservoir rocks and their accumulation in various types of traps in the subsurface. The course will also introduce geological concepts and techniques to exploration and production of petroleum and gas.
OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE
The main objectives of this course are:
(1) to introduce the student to basic geological concepts of generation, migration and accumulation of petroleum and natural gas to form economic reserves, and
(2). To teach the student applications of geological concepts and techniques in exploration for and production of petroleum and gas reserves.
CONTENT
The context of petroleum geology. Properties of oil, gas and gas hydrate. Sedimentary basins. Subsurface environment and subsurface fluids. Reservoir and its properties. Generation and migration of petroleum and gas. Tar sands and oil shales. Exploration methods: remote sensing, geophysical surveys, subsurface geology, well drilling, and formation evaluation. Assessment of petroleum and gas reserves and resources.
