COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course provides the students with the basic principles, concepts and equations used in production engineering to solve artificial lift problems in wells. Basic equations to study fluid flow from the reservoir to the surface are derived. The concept of artificial lift is introduced. Oil and gas surface facilities are presented. Pumping and surface installation's design is also given.
OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE
The main objective of the course is to acquaint the students with the concepts, equations, analysis methods, and tools used in oil production engineering, that are beyond the flowing well production methods taught in Production Engineering I course. The other objectives are to
(a) develop students' ability to apply a quantitative reasoning to production engineering problems,
(b) develop students' ability to apply an integrated knowledge of math, physics, geo-sciences and engineering sciences to the solution of artificial lift design problems,
(c) develop students' ability to design pumping well data,
(d) provide students with a background for more advanced courses in production engineering.
CONTENT
Essentials of artificial lift methods. Positive displacement pumps. Sucker-rod pumping equipment and design, dynamometer chart analysis. Gas lift design, gas lift valves, determination of injection depths, maximum production rate. Hydraulic pumping equipment and design; electrical submersible pump equipment and design, jet pumping equipment and design. Selection of artificial lift systems. Oil and natural gas surface facilities.
