COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides the student with a solid background on the fundamental physical properties of porous media, rock/fluid interactions on the basis of surface chemistry concept, and principle of fluid flow through porous media. Students are responsible to give an oral presentation on a topic relating to any of the subject on rock properties.
OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE
The main objective of the course is to give a solid background to the students on course of rock properties. The other objectives are to:
(a) Develop students ability to apply an integrated knowledge of math, physics, geosciences, and engineering sciences for the solution of rock property problems.
(b) Develop students' capabilities for analytical thinking and solving the problems on the course of rock properties.
(c) Encourage to develop and improve students' ability in oral communication throughout the course.
CONTENT
Fundamental physical properties of porous media; porosity, permeability, saturation, and electrical properties. Rock/fluid interactions; wettability concept, relative permeability, and capillary pressure. Fluid flow in porous media: Derivation of Darcy's equation for incompressible and compressible fluid flows. Linear and radial flow equations in layered systems. Oral presentation on a specific topic of rock properties.
