COURSE DESCRIPTION
|
Wide variety of subjects in health, safety
and environmental protection in the activities and facilities
of oil, gas, and geothermal industries are covered in
the course. A term project is assigned to groups of students,
who are required to present their work to other groups,
and all the project reports are recorded on a CD for each
student in the class.

OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE
|
The main objective is to have students
become aware of the diversity, complexity, and impact
potential of the activities in petroleum and geothermal
industries on health and safety, and environment. Other
objectives are to 1) develop students' ability in exploring
the possible causes, prevention, and remediation of such
impacts by analytical thinking and reasoning, while applying
the integrated knowledge of physics, mathematics, engineering
and geo-sciences and,
2) develop students' ability in oral and written communications
and team work,
3) guide students to explore the solutions for safety
and environmental problems by creative thinking and considering
legal aspects.

CONTENT
|
Policies and techniques for defensive
driving and maintenance of vehicles in oil and gas industry.
Safety in oil and gas fields and laboratories. Hazardous
materials and pollutants commonly encountered in oil and
gas industry. Safety aspects of human psychology. Definitions
of technical and legal terms in environmental protection.
Environmental impact assessment. Environmental considerations
in drilling, production, EOR, and pipeline operations
in oil, gas, and geothermal fields. Causes, prevention,
detection, containment, and cleanup of oil spills.
